He Promised Me.

I know.

Those Pinterest boards of yours are chalk full of it.

Wedding ideas. Marriage photos. Cute kids. Home décor.

I mean the gold calligraphy signs… the magenta flower bouquets… the dark green trees in the back of engagement photos… cute babies in big grey sinks…

Yes and please.

But sometimes, I feel a friction in my heart between when I scroll through Pinterest, and when I read my Bible.

Sometimes, I feel my heart wandering from Jesus to the pretty things of weddings, marriage, kids, home..

He has never promised you marriage.

Yeah, I said it. I’ll say it again:

He has never promised you marriage.

He has never promised you success.

He has never promised you a degree.

He has never promised you kids.

He has never promised you money.

He has never promised you prosperity in this life.

He has never promised you health in this life.

So stop getting angry with God because you don’t have it.

Stop the foolish and selfish and entitled arguing with God.

Quit the pleading, the begging, the waiting.

He never promised it.

Do you want God, or are you just going to God to get a man? Or success? Or kids?

At the foot of the cross, on that day, we saw our sin and we called to the Lord Jesus for forgiveness. In tears and with a wrenched heart and a clenched hands, we gave our lives to sweet Jesus.

Do you remember those eyes of grace and fire, those divine and everlasting arms open, embracing you as your chains broke, as you returned to your First Love?

Oh, when did we pick back up the life we laid at the cross?

Oh, how are we now hoping in and living for things of this world?

Since when did you start thinking that it’s about you?

If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world but forfeits his soul?

Matthew 16:24-26

Christ Jesus preached these words to men and women, wide-eyed and convicted and passionate.

He preaches them to you and me.

I don’t know what Jesus you’re following, but sister, hear the words of Christ Jesus, Son of God, Redeemer and Victor, King of Kings and Lord of Lords, seated at the right hand of God:

If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

Yet somehow after His words pierce my soul, and I lay down my life yet again at His feet,

I find myself day-dreaming about marriage. About the cutest wedding. About what I will wear on Saturday. About what my kids will look like, what they be like. About how to decorate. About what to post next on Instagram.

I don’t get why I do it. I feel the tension; I feel a war waging in my soul between life now and life everlasting.

I fear that we have become as Israel in the book of Judges; they did not turn away from the worship of God, but rather just added God to the list of gods they worshipped.

They just added him into the mix of the idols in their life.

Yes, God. But also Baal. And Dagon. And Qadeshtu. And El.

Yes, God. But also marriage. But also kids. But also success in my work. But also money.

Hear me: Our God is a Giver of wonderful gifts of all natures.

Marriage. Singleness. Kids. Family. Home. Money. Jobs. Success.

Salvation. Sanctification. Holiness. Righteousness. Mercy. Grace.

And they are exactly that: gifts.

You never expect a gift. They are unexpected and unassumed. They are not promises.

They are gifts.

You, my sister, your life is deeply rooted and grounded in Christ, Christ alone, and the presence of any of these beautiful things are gifts that bring forth abundant praise to the Giver.

There’s a life, a reality that goes deeper than what you can see right now.

This, crazy as it may sound, is your true life, your true self.

If then you have been raised with Christ,

Seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

Set your mind on things that are above, not on things that are on this earth.

For you have died,

And your life is hidden with Christ in God.

When Christ who is your life appears,

Then you also will appear with Him in glory.

Colossians 3:1-4

God has made promises to us.

No, not promises of fading and fleeting things of this earth.

You, my sister, have been made everlasting promises by God.

A glorious inheritance in Christ as my lungs take their last breath of oxygen and my soul beholds Heaven. (Eph. 1:18)

An everlasting Kingdom… where sweet Jesus is King and love binds together all of life. (Mark 1:15)

Every tear I have ever cried…. every precious tear will be wiped away by hands that bled for me. (Rev. 21:4)

His beautiful, glorious, holy face… we will see it. Oh, our eyes will behold YHWH, Elohim, I AM Himself! (Rev. 21:3)

For all of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding “Yes!”

And through Christ, our “Amen”, which means yes, ascends to God for his glory.

2 Corinthians 1:20 NLT

Yes, the riches of a glorious inheritance.

Yes, the Kingdom of Heaven.

Yes, He will wipe away our tears.

Yes, we will be His people and He will be our God.

Yes, we will see His face.

Yes, in sweet Jesus!

And so we utter, amen!

Sister, Jesus changes everything.

We could be married or single; we could have kids or have no family.

We could have a home or be homeless, be in good health or sick, be rich or poor.

Take heart,

His salvation is here. His glorious inheritance is near. His Kingdom is at hand. He will wipe away every single one of your precious tears. He will be our God, and we will be His people.

So shush the complaining and arguing. Throw off the bitterness. Shatter the anger and rid yourself of foolishness.

Sister, you are in Christ Jesus.

Take up your cross and follow Him.

He overwhelms and satisfies our hearts to the point of deep fulfillment.

When we see our sweet Jesus for who He is, we can’t help but burn for the Kingdom, through each and every season in this life.

Seek first the Kingdom, and trust that everything you need will be gifted to you by the God who loves you.

May our hearts abound in the hope and joy of His promises.

May our hearts blaze with the hope of glory.

In Christ, His promises are faithfully satisfied.

Oh sister, yes and amen!

With much, much love. And a soul clinging to His promises. –Melissa

  1. this is absolutely beautiful. and agreed with people above: this totally does away with the prosperity gospel and is exactly what all of us young women need in our lives. We need to be reminded that our lives are for Christ and not for ourselves. Thank you thank you for sharing. Much love.

  3. -amazing, Melissa. You are young but filled with the Holy Spirit. There’s a quote somewhere that says that singleness should be a shining beacon of Christ’s all-sufficiency, and you’ve captured that well! As a woman on that same journey, I commend you for this.

  5. Stumbled across this from your IG stories and maaaaan did I need this right now! This is where the disconnect and unhappiness comes from. From believing I am entitled to certain things. And why? Because I see others post about it or talk about it? Yes we may get these things, but like you said, they are gifts. We have to seek Him first and shift our perspective/priorities. I appreciate you for writing this. I thank God for speaking to me through you. God bless you!
